Annecy is one of the six stages of the Tour de France that will take place in Savoie this year

The Tour de France, an unmissable event for cycling fans

This cycling competition started its crazy race in 1903. In stages, cycling professionals challenge each other and fight for the yellow jersey, the symbol of the leader in the sport. For three consecutive weeks, the riders travel across France on their two wheels, taking in mountain stages, time trials and city centre stages.

The Tour de France was the brainchild of Henri Desgrange, a former racing cyclist. He had become a journalist and was trying to promote his newspaper, L'Auto, to compete with its rival, Le Vélo.

The race was appreciated by the whole profession and riders from all over the world soon took part. Today, this event is a must in the French calendar. Thousands of spectators come to the roadside every year to cheer on their favourites.

The peloton will pass through Annecy in 2023

At the end of 2022, the route of the 2023 Tour de France was revealed to the general public. From 1 July, the riders will set off from Bilbao in Spain for a finish on the Champs-Élysées in Paris at the end of the month, on 30 July.

Six stages take place in the two Savoie regions and the Ain. The 15th stage of the Tour is a 180-kilometre route that will pass through Annecy-le-Vieux, among other places.

The Col de la Forclaz near Annecy will be one of the four difficulties of this stage along with the Col de la Croix Fry, the Côte des Amerands and the climb to Saint-Gervais-Le-Bettex.
